Holiday Open House!

The Perfect Petal's team of hunters and gatherers are in their element in these rich sunny fall days, seeking out (and hoarding a little bit) singularly stunning stems from America's most innovative independent farms. Each week we see these newborns of nature, these budding stars of the field, in the form of over large crimson ranunculus, Robin's Egg Blue porcelain vine and sorbet hued poppies. A great time to come and see the fruits of our labors is always our holiday open houses. The first is on November 11th and 12th and will feature a full color spectrum of fall and winter crops in garlands, wreathes and designed floral table scapes. The second Open House includes our sister store POSH. Both locations shine the spotlight on our brilliant wares for the home on December 3rd and 4th. We will feature artisan ceramics, local fine jewelry artists and fragrance masters.

Colorado Fall Weddings. Dreamy...

.. a couple of weeks ago, Heather and I drove out to Chatfield Botanic Gardens armed with piles of vegetables from the farmer's market, bundles of autumn foliage and enough orange floribunda roses to make our own perfume. The mission was to set a table in the orchard in order to help Jenna Walker and her Photography group practice the art of shooting wedding details. We added in old barn pulleys and shovels, my old French silverware and a boutonniere made of asparagus and garden twine. The September sun went to work, lending it's subtle glow to our fall flowers and these talented photographers images.

The summer days catch us once more staring too long at the honeybees on the verbena and the rainbows lacing the sprinkler. The deep heat that soaks into us and removes the long months of Colorado cold is familiar and welcome. With summer, The Perfect Petal is welcoming seasonal crops of fresh cut yarrow and sunflowers, locally grown sunset dahlias and cheerful coreopsis.

As we speak the Petals are working away on three unique and lovely summer weddings for what should be a beautful Colorado weekend. Lynn and Crystal, two of our extraordinary wedding directors, have put an incredible amount of energy and creativity into these special events - and our design team is deep in the process of making that vision come to life.

DIY Easter Arrangements

Once a week we get together and talk about ideas - things we've seen, been inspired by, or that have been rambling around in our brains. With Easter coming up, we found ourselves discussing fun, DIY centerpiece ideas. We came up with a design that draws inspiration from traditional Easter elements, while also incorporating a more modern aesthetic. We wanted something that the whole family could participate in, and that can be personalized to suite your taste. And frankly, we fell in love with it!

Monochromatic clusters of fresh spring blooms rest beside eggs dyed in matching hues, nestled in a carton of the same color, and accented with scattered egg shaped candles.

To color the eggs, try using natural dyes. We picked some up a local store, but you can also make your own using household ingredients, vegetables and spices. By eliminating toxic dyes from the process, you will be able to compost the egg shells once they've been used! Check out our links below for tips and recipes for natural egg dying. We used the same dye for the eggs to color the cartons. Make sure the cartons are thoroughly dried before placing them on the table, as they could stain your linens, and will be very fragile to move around.

You'll need:
1 block of floral foam
Clippers
3 Carton of eggs in cardboard cartons
3 Colors of Dye
Votive, Tea light, or small floating candles
Fresh floral product of your choice (we used 1 bunch apricot spray roses, 1 bunch green bells of ireland, 1 bunch yellow blooming acacia)

Soak the floral foam by placing it in a sink full of water and allowing it to fill with water on it's own - don't press it down or it won't soak evenly. Let soak for approximately 5 minutes, then cut the block into 3 even pieces lengthwise. Line the lid of each colored egg carton with cellophane, and fill with one of the slices of floral foam.

Evenly cut up your floral product so as to get as many blooms as possible. You will want to leave approximately 1 inch of stem to insert into the foam.

Spray roses are perfect for this project, as you will have a large amount of blooms. It's best if you let them open for a few days so they are nice and full, and achieve a natural, gardeny look. We used an apricot colored rose, but they come in many shades of pinks, peach, yellow, white and cream. We'd be happy to help you order a variety that suites your aesthetic.

Once all three cartons have been filled with flowers and eggs, you will want to replace a few eggs per carton with a candle. We did two candles per carton.

This centerpiece looks incredible draping down a long table, like this one at our one of our favorite local restaurants, Venue.

It's simple, yet bold and dramatic - and a new way to look at traditional dyed egg centerpieces. And, of course, there's plenty of room for interpretation. How about doing the entire piece in shades of blues, purples and fuchsia -with one tone blending into the next. Purple onions and beets make excellent egg dyes, and there's are wonderful selection of floral product that we could help you pick out to correspond. Or cooler is always stocked with a wide variety of fresh cuts for you to pick from, or let us order in a few bunches just for you.

And to top it all off... we just couldn't resist this tiny, hand blown glass bunny! We're known for carrying a selection of quirky hand blown creature like this little guy. As an extra touch, why not place one on each napkin as a favor for your guests. It's bound to get conversation going, and laughter flowing.

Looking for something a little more simple? How about this streamlined centerpiece consisting of antique milkglass containers, white eggs, and a lush cluster of blooming acacia. For a special touch, hand write your guests name in pencil on white eggs and rest inside a nest of natural twine, at each place setting or napkin. This design is absolutely elegant!

Curly Girl is owned by Leigh Standley, a visual artist who has found a way to focus her creative vision into a wonderful line of cards, notebooks, calenders - as well as wall art, and even clothing. Girl of All Work is brand new to the Petal, and we are in love with it. The products are so fun and playful, and absolutely unique. Frances Photography

One of the most rewarding things about this industry is working with so many talented and exciting people. Over the years, we have developed many wonderful working relationships with truly inspiring artists. For the past few months we have been exploring new design concepts at the Petal - particularly in branding, logo, and website. It's been a wonderful experience, and one that has been thouroughly enriched by the colaborative efforts of the creative proffesionals we are lucky enough to be surrounded by.

Right at the top of that list is Frances Marron of Frances Photography, who has done all the new photography for our upcoming website, and who've been lucky enough to work with on many weddings over the years.

Frances views photography as a means of expressing herself as an artist, and draws inspiration from other artforms, such as fashion, to enhance her work with weddings. "A wedding day is an unlimited oppurtunity to create art".

Although she also works in commercial photography, Frances's focus is on wedding and portrait work, and she has a simply beautiful sensibilty when it comes to photographing people. To be honest, we get a little giddy everytime we hear she'll be shooting a wedding we're working on. Right off the bat, we know we're going to have stunning shots for our portfolio, but also it's nice to know our clients will be taken care of.

As the 2010 wedding season nears, we at the Perfect Petal have been doing a little reminiscing. Taking a few moments to look back on all the weddings we adored from last season, and all the amazing vendors we had the honor and pleasure of working with. Looking back through our ever growing portfolio, we have a chance to gain inspiration and ideas for things to come, and it reminds us of all the joy we gain from the experience of helping a bride and groom achieve their vision.

Last fall we worked on a wedding that we really treasure. Inspired by a fall palette, we used rich oranges, rusts, browns and greens. The design was playful, yet elegant, and really showed off the artistic spirit of the bride and groom.

Laura Dombrowski, an amazing photographer who we are always honored to work with, did an incredible job of capturing the mood of this incredible wedding. We adore her attention to detail, and her work as a visual storyteller.

Merigue - Best Overall Design

The Perfect Petal and Epicurian Catering are so proud to be the winners at this year's ISES Wedding Showcase for Best Overall Design in the Fantasy Tables Competition. The concept of this table sprung from vintage carnival inspiration, bold color themes, and a desire to be playful, modern and innnovative.

First we drew from elements that excited us : Stunning vintage umbrellas, our own personal collections of vintage cameras, old black and white photographs, handmade playful top hat lamps... and gathered them together to create a cohesive modern design with a strong nod to the past.

The space was accented by an iron gazebo illuminated with bistro lights, and all tables were adorned with lush linens and ribbons in bold yellow, gray, black and white.

Something we try to communicate with our clients, when concepting a wedding, is that the impact is in the details. Thoughtful design is about more than a beautiful floral centerpiece, it's about all the elements on a table coming together to tell a story. This is something we really wanted to express with Meringe.

Felted mustaches attached to yellow and white stripe straws bring in an old time carnival flare - and show off a bride and grooms sense of humor.

Bright yellow billy balls and football mums mingle with blooming acacia and climbing passion vine.

Lemons, old fashions candies, and meticulously designed name tags and graphic elements tie the scene together.

No wedding would be complete without a killer bridal bouquet- this sassy little number has bright yellow tulips, billy balls and romantic garden roses, accented with a dramatic gray and white striped ribbon collar.

And, of couse, we had a lot of FUN!!

Once a year, us industry nerds get together and show off our "fantasy tables" at the ISES Denver Wedding Showcase. It's a chance for us to luxuriate in our wildest floral and decor dreams. To indulge ourselves; to dream. This year, 2010, was completely over the top! Hosted by Mile High Station, who were a dream to work with, the event featured Denver's heaviest hitters in decor, event design and food. The Perfect Petal showcased two fantasy designs. The first we named "Smitten", which won 1st place for "Best Use of Theme" (!!).

Based on Vintage Romance in the Orchard, we chose the following elements to paint a memory... tell a story.

California grown Garden roses in pale peaches and blush...

white anemones with deep black centers, soft silvery foliage, ranunculus and handmade paper blooms...

lushly designed, trailing down a lace robed banquet table.

The centerpieces rested upon porcelain cake plates and stacks of vintage books. Handcarved birds and playful garden rose "cupcakes" adorn each place setting.

In collaboration with Catering By Design, every inch of the space was thoughtfully arranged. Antique hutches overflowed with jars of homemade pear preserves for guests.

Vintage brass light fixtures and mason jar lanterns, hanging from a suspended tree branch, cast a warm light over the floral displays and beautiful array of appetizers and small plate treats.

Award winning Chef and Owner of Catering By Design, Cade Nagy, created an absolutely stunning and delicious display of food, which won 1st place for "Best Food" (!!).

Nicknames

The Perfect Petal is a family of floral designers, event solutions managers, production engineers and more! Like all happy families we have nicknames for each other, not-so-private jokes, "long stories"
and trusty tools. Our designers have long been referred to as
"Petals", coined by the Highland neighborhood peeps years ago. The large cooler is the "Silver Bullet" that store our floral masterpieces. Either "Junior", "Whitey" or "Stinky" is assigned to the production engineer teams as their delivery vehicle for an event set up. Therefore, on any given day, if you hear someone call out from the back boutique , "Hey, Petal! While you're in the Silver Bullet, will you please grab the Smith order and load it into Whitey? Rest assured... this is normal for our family.

Also a member of The Perfect Petal family and nicknamed by her grandmother, is Sookie. She is an artist and jewelry maker who works with different types of clay designing bright and fun collections of various western-inspired pieces. Because Sookie Sookie jewelry is handmade from start to finish, no two pieces will ever look exactly the same. This 'happy' jewelry line makes people feel good when wearing it, so come and see for yourself!

This last month has been busy, busy, busy in Wedding and Event world! We've been consulting, designing, setting up, installing, and takin names!

Highlights:

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science unveiled it's new Health Exhibit on Friday night and The Perfect Petal had a marvelous time with the decor.

We used concentrations of zuchini, orange and yellow bell peppers, and key limes to spice up the table florals, and fun uplighting and fabric in the ceiling to complement the party's healthy theme.

Grand Marnier and Navan Mixology Summit, Vail 2009

This event was a blast! The petal put together modern clusters of white vases with kumquats, flame orange calla lilies and orange mokara orchids, to compliment a room of lush white draping, contemporary white furniture and brilliant warm lighting.

Saturday April 4th was the Hoops and Hoopla event at INVESCO Feild at Mile High. The event is a "Fans night out of Food, Fun and the Men's College Basketball Semifinals" ans benefits National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
We had a lot of fun conceptualizing the table decor for this great event.

Centerpeices used basketballs submerged in glass cubes with playful white florals and a yellow sweatband.

Tall buffet peices where dressed in black and white striped referee uniforms...

...whistle and all.

Monday night at Infinity Park Event Center was the annual Readers Choice Awards Ceremony, put on by Colorado Meetings and Events Magazine.

"The Best Of awards are designed to honor the cream of the crop in the regional meetings and events industry. We achieve this by giving the power to determine the winners solely to the readers— every vote in each category is influential and important to determine the final winner."

"Every single winner in the annual Readers' Choice Best Of Award campaign is hand-picked by the meeting planners, event planners and suppliers who read Colorado Meetings + Events magazine."

It was a great night for the Petal. We were honored to be nominated in the Event Decor/Floral category.

And, even more exciting, our very own Luc Hughart, Event Designer Extraordinaire, was being inducted into the Colorado Meetings and Events Hall of Fame for Up and Coming Supplier. (!!!) We are all so excited and proud of him for all his achievements!

We put together some very playful and modern centerpieces for the event, using black branches and lime green florals...

...with peacock feathers and teal wire accents.

And then there was the food...

Our New Favorite Thing!
TIM WALKER: Photographic Genius.

This image, The Dress Lamp Tree, is the inspiration for an upcoming window display. His images are a wonderful combination of fantasy, fashion and the supernatural. Utilizing elaborate sets and lavish locations, Walker creates a sense of unreality; of a world just outside our own. So Dreamy!

Photobooths : Bright Idea!

This season, I'm loving the photobooth at wedding receptions and cocktail hours. It's a wonderful way for your guests to have fun and memorialize the evening. Taking it one step further, how great is it to use the photo booth strips as a guest book!? Provide the blank guestbook (I like the black pages, here), have your friends attach their photo strips, and write next to it in silver marker. Now there's faces next to names, and a great way to capture all the fun and electricity of the moment!

While we're on the topic...
I like to pay attention to entrances and exits with our wedding floral plans. They effect everyone's first impressions and take away thoughts..so I like to make sure we always remember to add fun touches to the escort card or placecard table.

..Fusing cool paper touches like these fall leaves into the story really is a fun thing to do in a city or a mountain venue. This was done by Table6Productions.

...and mossy lichen covered branches with river stones and succulents are fun for more remote Colorado destination weddings..the gateway to the reception decor is just like the window into the event that you give the guest when you mail the invitation..1st impressions and glimpses are everything and they help to complete the whole story!

Local Love! Tokyo Milk

Right now, our clients are eating up Tokyo Milk fragrances like there's no tomorrow. The collection is concepted and designed here in Denver but by now you've seen it in Elle, O Magazine, Allure, INStyle, Nylon (hooray for them!).

The line itself is quite bohemian and drop dead romantic, with archival artwork and typewritten labels. There are about 20 scents in all, with fragrances like Paper & Cotton: (coriander, white sage, birch, & tundra moss) and Gin and Rosewater: (citrus zest, rosewood, mimosa, and mandarin..) The little glass bottles are like tiny paintings that, when collected, serve as an impromptu shrine to you and your many moods! Denver's amazing, isn't it?

We thought you all would enjoy seeing The Perfect Petal Fantasy Wedding table from the ISES event last month. For those of you who were not at The Chateaux for this flawlessly produced event by Michelle Gillette, here are images of our entry, shot by Frances Marron of Frances Photography, and Joe Keum of JK Studio Photography.

Gold paillette covered lampshades on birch for dramatic elevation around the lusciously draped table in gold embroidered "aspen" leaf taffeta. Gold painted birch wrapped vases with open sensual callas seal the the Colorado Opulence theme.

Cindy, Luc and Crystal worked alongside Angel Montez of The Ritz Carlton Denver to develop this concept.

The Ritz's pastry chef created intensely fabulous Colorado Gold pyramids for the bridal party's ultimate dessert.

We see eye to eye with Denver and it's mad craze for local love, Linsday Bloom. Here are some of her dazzling, contemporary jewels, chains, and drops. (She is having a show here with the whole shebang on March 19th for Third Thursday)
